Description

Description

Doxycycline monohydrate acts as an antibiotic, antimicrobial agent and a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor. In addition to this, it inhibits the bacterial protein synthesis by preventing the interaction of aminoacyl-tRNA and the bacterial ribosome.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.

General Description

  • Doxycycline monohydrate is a semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity
  • It is a tetracycline with the 5beta-hydrogen group replaced by a hydroxy group
  • Doxycycline monohydrate acts by binding the 30S ribosomal subunit and preventing polypeptide formation
  • Doxycycline monohydrate may also act on the 50S ribosomal subunit, is a known inhibitor of collagenases, and has anti-inflammatory properties

Application

  • Doxycycline can be used for study of cancers, infections, and antibiotic resistance in laboratory settings
