Cannabis Packaging

Under the proper conditions, cannabis can remain stable for as long as two years. Choose an appropriate container for your short- or long-term storage needs.
Cannabis can be packaged in many ways, depending on the form of the product, its intended use, and the intended user.
- Child-resistant packaging may be needed for products used where it can be accessed by children; certified child-resistant packaging must meet ASTM D3475 standards
- Single-use and smell-proof bags may be used with flowers and edibles; compostable bags are also an option
- Production and transport containers include high-barrier, stand-up zipper pouches or traditional "turkey" bags
- Thermoform packaging provides rigid protection for cartridges and other items
- Screw-top Glass jars, plastic jars, or plastic flip-top containers offer easy access to contents; suitable for concentrates and salves
- Prescription bottles and lids offer access barriers; may also be certified child-resistant
- Pre-rolled cones; tall, thin tubes for joints and blunts
- Dropper bottles for liquid forms
Cannabis is degraded by light, air, humidity, and temperature, so store at an RH between 59% and 63%. Mold may start to form if the humidity exceeds 65% and the product can become brittle at an RH of less than 55%.
Keep cannabis in cool, dry places at temperatures between 32 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. At 77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, mildew and mold can grow, and excessive heat can destroy the terpenes and cannabinoids. Excessive cold can affect the decarboxylation process.
For long-term cannabis storage, use airtight containers, preferably glass, and use humidity packs to help control moisture, prevent mold, and preserve its organoleptic qualities. Cannabis-infused products may come with storage instructions, and concentrates like alcohol tinctures are less vulnerable to mold.
