Les cylindres gradués sont des contenants hauts, étroits, et ronds marqués de graduations. Fabriqués de verre ou de plastique, les plus gros cylindres gradués sont souvent fabriqués de plastique qui est léger et qui ne brisera pas comme le verre.
Les cylindres gradués ont une base ou un pied solide pour la stabilité et un bec verseur pour faciliter la tâche en versant le contenu. Puisqu’ils sont un peu instables, certains cylindres de verre ont un pare-choc ou anneau en plastique afin d’aider à prévenir les bris accidentels si le cylindre chute.

Bien que les mesures par cylindres gradués sont plus exactes et précises que celles effectuées par flacons ou béchers, les cylindres ne devraient pas être utilisés pour de véritables analyses volumétriques.
