Vancomycin hydrochloride is a glycopeptide antibiotic, effective for the treatment of endocarditis caused by Gram-positive bacteria. It is used to inhibit the synthesis of bacterial cell wall and prevents the synthesis of peptidoglycan by binding tightly to peptides containing D-alanyl-D-alanine at the free carboxyl end. It is isolated from both Streotomyces orientalis and Nocardia lurida.
