Toluene is widely used as an organic solvent in various industries like paints, pharmaceuticals, dyes, agrochemicals and polymers. It is used as an additive in gasoline and improves octane ratings, as a fullerene indicator, in paint thinners and silicone sealants, as a coolant in sodium cold traps used in nuclear reactor system loops and as a fuel for both two-stroke and four-stroke engines. It is also used as a raw material in the production of benzene, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, toluene diisocyanate, benzyl-tert-butyl peroxide, xylene and many other chemical products. It plays an important role in biochemistry experiments to break open red blood cells in order to extract haemoglobin as well as used in the removal of cocaine from coca leaves to make coca-cola syrup. Further, it used as a standard material for chromatography and as an analytical reagent.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.
