2-Butanone also known as methyl ethyl ketone is a colorless fairly volatile liquid with a pleasant pungent odor. It is primarily used as a solvent, for making other chemicals, and for production of wax from petroleum. It is derived from refluxing methyl acetoacetate and dilute sulphuric acid.
