Capture images and analyze data from western blots and gels efficiently and easily with the Invitrogen iBright FL1500 Imaging System. This high-performance instrument enhances the imaging experience through powerful hardware, advanced automated technologies, and an interface that is easy to use for researchers of all experience levels.

The iBright FL1500 Imaging System supports the main imaging applications of fluorescent, chemiluminescent, and colorimetric western blots, in addition to fluorescent stained nucleic acid gels, fluorescent stained protein gels, colorimetric stained protein gels, and colorimetric membrane stains. We also offer the iBright CL1500 Imaging System, which features the same imaging capabilities as the iBright FL1500 Imaging System, but without fluorescent western blot imaging functionality.

Features of the iBright FL1500 Imaging System include:

  • 9.1 MP cooled CCD camera—high sensitivity and dynamic range to help enable the detection of subtle differences in samples
  • Five fluorescence channels—multiplex and capture up to four proteins in a single blot for more meaningful and representative experiments
  • Smart Exposure technology—provides rapid determination of optimal exposure time to help minimize the need to repeat exposures to acquire the desired signal
  • High Dynamic Range Imaging*—Smart Range HDR combines optimized short and long exposures into a single HDR image to capture an extended linear dynamic range and providing high-quality non-saturated data for improved quantitation
  • Simple interface—clear layout of functions and features combined with a 12.1-inch capacitive touchscreen for a smooth imaging experience
  • Advanced automated features—automatic sample rotation, automatic zoom, and automatic focus help streamline image capture

Why do the iBright Imaging Systems use green LED illumination for DNA imaging?

The iBright Imaging Systems utilize a transilluminator based on green LEDs, which effectively excite popular DNA dyes such ethidium bromide and SYBR Green dye and offer several additional benefits:

- No harmful UV rays: While UV light effectively excites many fluorescent dyes and stains, UV light is a health hazard. Further, prolonged exposure to UV light can damage DNA samples, and compromise the integrity of samples to be used for downstream applications, such as subcloning.
- No mercury waste: UV transilluminator bulbs may contain mercury, a hazardous substance, and therefore require special care for handling and disposal.
- Longer lifetime: LED bulbs have a substantially longer real-time life than fluorescent UV bulbs, which can add up to considerable cost savings over the lifetime of the instrument.

For additional information on iBright functionality, visit this page.

What automation features are included with the iBright FL1500 and CL1500 Imaging Systems?

The iBright FL1500 and CL1500 Imaging Systems include a suite of powerful automation tools to facilitate easy image capture and improve laboratory efficiency. These features include:
- Smart Exposure: this technology rapidly determines the optimal exposure time, minimizing the potential for over- or under-exposed images and the need to repeat exposures to get the desired signal. Smart exposure is enabled by built-in algorithms which aim to maximize sensitivity without creating band saturation.
- Automatic Mechanical Sample Rotation: The imager senses the edge of the sample and will physically rotate the turntable up to 10 degrees to straighten the sample prior to imaging.
- Automatic Zoom and Focus: After the sample is inserted in the imager, the system automatically optimizes the zoom and focus levels to allow for fast easy image capture and optimized image resolution.

How are images on an iBright Imaging System printed on a thermal printer?

Once communication is established between the IBright imager and the thermal printer, a print button will become available on the main screen near the image display. Pressing this button will initiate printing of the image currently shown on the instrument screen. This is a separate workflow from the print settings available through the system menu, which are used for printing image reports on a standard network printer.

For more information on iBright features and capabilities, visit this page.

How does the Thermal Printer for iBright Imaging Systems (Cat. No. A45235) interface with the iBright Imaging Systems?

To establish communication between the Thermal Printer and the iBright imager, first the communication channel on the printer needs to be updated. This can be done by accessing the printer menu, navigating from Digital to Driver and then using the up down toggle to set the printer to channel 897. Once that is complete, the thermal printer can then be connected directly to one of the iBright imager rear USB ports via A to B type USB cable. After installation, the thermal printer can be controlled directly with the iBright onboard software via the on-screen print functionality.

What is the best way to image Ponceau staining with an iBright Imaging System?

The recommended imaging method depends on the iBright imager model being used. For iBright FL1500 and CL1500 Imaging Systems, we recommend imaging Ponceau-stained samples with the Ponceau application that can be found in Universal mode. For the iBright CL750 Imaging System, we recommend imaging Ponceau-stained samples in Protein gel mode.

We always recommend imaging with the orange iBright System Contrast Tray (Cat. No. A56597), and if needed, adjust the focus or zoom to get bands as sharp as possible. Better quality pictures are obtained when the membrane is wet.
