Differentiate Staphylococcus saprophyticus from other coagulase-negative staphylococci with this ready-to-use, novobiocin-impregnated disk.

Differentiate Staphylococcus saprophyticus from other coagulase-negative staphylococci with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Novobiocin Disk.

In 1975, Kloos and Schleifer1 introduced the novobiocin disk test. Further studies were then conducted in 1977 using the novobiocin disk test for presumptive identification of S. saprophyticus, isolated from the clinical specimens2,3,4. Novobiocin Disk can be used to differentiate S. saprophyticus from other coagulase-negative staphylococci by overnight disk test method or 5-hour broth disk procedure. In 1984, Harrington and Gaydos5, compared these methods.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus is a common cause of urinary tract infections in female patients. This understanding has led to exploring several methods to identify this pathogen in clinical specimens.

  • Ready to use: Reagent-impregnated disk.
  • Convenient: Can be used for the overnight disk test method or the 5-hour broth disk procedure
  • Easy to interpret: Visual inspection to observe turbidity or growth.

The Novobiocin Disk contains 5 μg novobiocin. Novobiocin resistance is intrinsic in S. saprophyticus. The mechanisms of novobiocin resistance include inhibition of cell wall synthesis as well as protein and nucleic acid synthesis. The Novobiocin Disk can therefore be used to differentiate S. saprophyticus from other coagulase-negative staphylococci. The disks can be used for testing by the overnight disk method or the 5-hour broth disk procedure.
