Contains a solution composed of a novel tetrazolium compound, MTS [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium, inner salt] and an electron coupling reagent, PMS (phenazine methosulfate). The MTS and PMS solutions are combined and added to cells in culture.

  • Designed to be performed quickly and easily in a 96-well plate with no washing or cell harvesting; detects as few as 1000 cells/well
  • Flexible assay can follow either a five-hour or overnight protocol
  • Eliminates solubilization steps because the colored product is soluble in tissue culture medium
  • Requires no scintillation cocktail, volative organic solvents, or radioactive waste disposal, increasing user safety
