Primary Rat Hippocampus Neurons

GIBCO Primary Rat Hippocampus Neurons are isolated from day-18 rat embryos and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Each vial contains 1x10e6 cells⁄ml viable cells (post-thaw). With the cryopreserved Primary Rat Hippocampus Neurons (E-18), Invitrogen offers neuroscience researchers a flexible, ready-to-use, and quality alternative to acutely isolated neurons. Besides being convenience, these products are developed through vigorous internal research to afford comparable properties, such as viability and cell function, with cells that are acutely isolated. They are also highly pure cells containing minimum amount of astrocytes and other glial cells, and are with minimal lot-to-lot variability because of large single lot manufacturing. Unlike the other commercially available primary rat hippocampus neurons that generally yield about 30% or lower post-thaw viability, Invitrogen cells consistently give post-thaw viability in the range of 50-80%.

I'm currently culturing neurons. Which media system do you recommend using in conjunction with the Poly-D-Lysine matrix?

We recommend using the B-27 Plus Neuronal Culture System when culturing neurons on Poly-D-Lysine. The B-27 Plus Neuronal Culture System is a complete media system that includes the B-27 Plus Supplement and the Neurobasal Plus Medium.

What cell types will Poly-D-Lysine support as an attachment matrix?

The Poly-D-Lysine matrix has successfully supported the attachment of primary rodent neurons, iPSC-derived neurons and PC12 cells.

Can primary rat neurons be cryopreserved again after they are cultured?

Primary rat neurons cannot be cryopreserved again because they will not revive.

Can primary rat neurons proliferate?

No, primary rat neurons do not proliferate.

Why does the manual for primary rat neurons have the instruction "Do not expose neurons to air at any time"?

Neurons tend to lift off from the complete medium change, which exposes cells to air. By changing half of the medium, the disturbance can be minimized.
