It is used for the synthesis of formaldehyde and acetic acid. It is also useful to make chemicals, to remove water from automotive and aviation fuels, as a solvent for paints and plastics, and as an ingredient in a wide variety of products. It plays an important role for the measurement of methyl ester content of pectin. It is also used as a mobile phase in High Performance Liquid Chromatography.
