Gibco™ Hibernate™-E Medium

Description
Hibernate Medium enables neurons to be maintained in ambient CO2 levels for up to 48 hours. This provides scientists with greater convenience and control while running bench-top live cell experiments, such as microscopy, flow cytometry, and other physiology studies. Hibernate Medium also allows for the preservation of viable brain tissue before processing for up to a month with refrigeration and maintenance of tissue slices.
Hibernate Medium may be combined with B-27 Supplements to yield a complete medium.
For other applications, we provide alternative formulations of Hibernate Medium and B-27 Supplements.
For established protocols using Hibernate Medium, access our Gibco Neurobiology Protocol Handbook.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Hibernate-E medium (Cat. No. A1247601) is designed for the maintenance of embryonic neural tissue and is suitable for short-term maintenance of cultured rat neurons at 37°C in ambient CO2 (up to 2 days) and long-term storage of viable brain tissue at 2 to 8°C (up to a month). However, it is not recommended for the initial plating and growing of neurons.
We offer Gibco Hibernate Medium for this purpose. When supplemented with Gibco B-27 Supplement and Gibco GlutaMAX-1 Supplement, this medium can allow for the manipulation of neurons at ambient CO2 for at least 48 hours while retaining their viability, and preserve viable brain tissue for up to a month when stored at 4 degrees C. Two Hibernate media are offered:
- Gibco Hibernate-A Medium (Cat. No. A1247501) is formulated for postnatal neurons.
- Gibco Hibernate-E Medium (Cat. No. A1247601) is formulated for embryonic neurons.
These two media have the same formulation and differ only in osmolality.
