GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain is a fast and sensitive coomassie-dye reagent that provides one-step ultrasensitive detection of proteins in polyacrylamide gels and membranes.

GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain is a fast and sensitive coomassie-dye reagent that provides one-step ultrasensitive detection of proteins in polyacrylamide gels and membranes. This protein-specific stain allows bands to be viewed directly on a gel or membrane during staining and is compatible with mass spectrometry applications. GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain is non-corrosive, non-flammable, and is classified as non-hazardous under the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) shipping requirements.

GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain is a fast and sensitive coomassie-dye reagent that provides one-step ultrasensitive detection of proteins in polyacrylamide gels and is formulated to avoid hazardous shipping.

Features include:

  • Sensitive—detect down to 9 ng of protein per band in 15 minutes
  • Safe—non-corrosive to skin, non-flammable, and safe to ship and store until activated
  • Minimal additional reagents—water washes only; no acid-fixative or methanol destain solutions required
  • Compatible—suitable for staining 1D and 2D polyacrylamide gels and nitrocellulose and PVDF membranes (multiple protocols provided in the instructions)
  • Multiple applications—qualitative visualization, quantitative densitometry, and downstream excision and analysis by mass spectrometry
  • Easy to use—add and dissolve activator crystals before first use, then simply add reagent to stain gels
  • Stable—store non-activated or activated stain at room temperature for up to one year

Because the supplied activator crystals are packaged and shipped dry in a separate bottle, GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain is classified as nonhazardous under the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) shipping requirements. For proper protein staining, the activator crystals must be dissolved in the staining reagent before use. Add the entire contents of the activator crystals bottle into the GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain bottle. Dissolve the crystals by mixing end-over-end for one minute, then allow it to remain at room temperature for five minutes before use. Store the activated stain at room temperature.

Is GelCode Blue Safe Stain compatible with homemade polyacrylamide gels?

Yes, GelCode Blue Safe Stain is compatible with homemade gels and most commercially available pre-cast gels.

Is GelCode Blue Safe Stain compatible with mass spectrometry and 2D electrophoresis?

Yes. It is compatible with mass spectrometry and 2D electrophoresis, as well as membrane staining.

When I added the activator crystals, some spilled from the bottle. Will my GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain work?

Yes, you can add up to 20% less crystals and still obtain acceptable staining.

Why are bands not visible on my gel after destaining when using the GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain?

It is possible the GelCode Blue Safe Stain was not activated. When the activator crystals are added, the pH of the stain should be approximately 2. If the stain was not activated, add the crystals and restain the gel; however, if the stain was activated, try increasing the staining time.

What is the sensitivity of the GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain?

The lower level of detection is 9 ng of protein per band.

How do I activate the GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain?

Add the entire bottle contents of the Activator Crystals into the GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain bottle. Dissolve the crystals by end-over-end mixing for 1 minute, and then allow it to remain at room temperature for 5 minutes before use.

What is the difference between the original GelCode Blue Stain and GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain?

GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain (Cat. No. 24594) was developed as a non-hazardous alternative to the original GelCode Blue Stain (Cat. No. 24590). The primary differences are that the GelCode Blue Safe Protein Stain must be activated before use, is non-corrosive, does not form colloids and is stable, safe to ship, use and store.
