Ethanethiol acts as a stabilizer for adhesives and an odorant for natural gas. It is used in the odorless liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in order to find out the gas leaks. It is used as key starting material for the preparation of ethylsulfonic acid, diethyldisulfide and sodium ethylmercaptide. Further, it is also used in the underground mining industry as stench gas. In organic synthesis, it gives powerful nucleophile set- in the presence of sodium hydroxide.
