Excess ammonia exerts toxic effects on the central nervous system. Elevated levels of ammonia may be either due to inborn errors of metabolism or secondary to other conditions. Elevated ammonia may be observed in advanced liver disease caused by Reye's Syndrome, viral hepatitis or cirrhosis.
