It is useful in the production of anthroquinone, the presursor for dyestuffs. It is used in the synthesis of bis (arene) metal complexes, through Fischer-Hafner synthesis. Gattermann-Koch reaction employs aluminum chloride for introducing formyl group onto aromatic rings.
