Vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 are two forms of vitamin D, a group of fat-soluble vitamins that play crucial roles in maintaining overall health. Vitamin D2, also known as ergocalciferol, is derived from plant sources. It is produced when ultraviolet (UV) light converts ergosterol, a compound found in certain fungi and plants, into vitamin D2. Vitamin D3, also called cholecalciferol, is synthesized in the skin of humans and animals upon exposure to UVB light from the sun. It is the most biologically active form of vitamin D and is also found in certain animal-based food sources. Both vitamin D2 and D3 undergo similar metabolic processes in the liver and kidneys to be converted into their active form, known as calcitriol. Calcitriol acts as a hormone that regulates calcium and phosphorus metabolism in the body.
