The A6.1 monoclonal antibody recognizes human, mouse, and rat thrombospondin-1, a member of the thrombospondin family of extracellular calcium-binding proteins. Thrombospondin-1 is a secreted glycoprotein that was first discovered in activated platelets but is also expressed by endothelial cells, adipocytes, fibroblasts, macrophages, monocytes, and smooth muscle cells. Thrombospondin-1 functions by binding members of the extracellular matrix such as fibronectin, integrins, and heparin, and its signaling is mediated through activation of the TGF beta signaling pathway. Thrombospondin-1 has been shown to be involved in angiogenesis, inflammation, osteogenesis, cell proliferation, and synaptogenesis during neural development.
