RecA Recombinant Protein, RP-4900, from Invitrogen.

E. coli RecA protein is a very important enzyme for homologous recombination and recombinational repair. Expression is induced by SOS response caused by DNA damage. The RecA protein has multiple functions, such as single stranded DNA dependent ATPase activity, DNA annealing activity, formation of D-loops and Holliday structures during homologous recombination, and co-protease activities that promote self-cleavage of the LexA repressor, lambda phage repressor and UmuD protein. RecA protein binds to single and double stranded DNA for nucleofilament formation. It carries out a central role in homologous recombination. Its is homologous to the eukaryotic Rad51 protein and Dmcl protein.

RP-4900 can be used as a positive control for Western blots with polyclonal RecA (PA1-4924). This product can also be used for studies of the homologous recombination mechanism and SOS response, to facilitate hybridization during library screening using a DNA probe, and to facilitate observation of nucleofilament formation of DNA by electron microscopy. The Human gene Rad51 is homologous to the highly conserved bacterial gene RecA. RP-4900 calculated molecular weight is ∽38 kDa.
