A compound used to convert alkyl halides into the corresponding alkylthiocyanates. Undergoes nucleophilic substitution reactions with phase-transfer catalysts. Silver thiocyanate may be used as well, the precipitation of insoluble silver halides help simplify workup. Treatment of isopropyl bromide with sodium thiocyanate in a hot ethanolic solution affords isopropyl thiocyanate.
Soluble in water (1250g/L), alcohol, and acetone.
Hygroscopic, protect from humidity and water. Store in cool, dry conditions in well sealed container.
