This B97 monoclonal antibody reacts with human lactoferrin. This 80kDa glycoprotein is detectable in the kidney, lung, pancreas, gallbladder, prostate, seminal vesicle, gut, and liver. Lactoferrin is also present in mucosal secretions such as breast milk, tears, and saliva. In immune cells, high levels of lactoferrin can be found within the secondary granules of neutrophils, but not in lymphocytes or monocytes. A member of the transferrin family of proteins, lactoferrin binds two iron molecules to mediate its transport and storage. Lactoferrin plays an important role in host defense against pathogens and can regulate adaptive immune responses. Receptors for lactoferrin are present on the surface of lymphocytes, granulocytes, monocytes, mast cells, epithelial, and endothelial cells.
