Human interferon beta is a glycosylated member of the type I family of interferons, which also includes IFN alpha. Human IFN alpha and beta share 50% amino acid sequence homology and bind the IFN a/b receptor (IFNAR), which consists of two subunits IFNAR1 and IFNAR2, with different affinities. Binding of IFN to its receptor activates signal transduction, including the JAK/STAT and p38 MAPK pathways. Many studies have established IFN beta as a mediator of anti-viral, anti-proliferative, and anti-inflammatory functions, as well as an effective treatment for multiple sclerosis.
