A small segment of the viral hemagglutinin coat protein is widely used as an epitope tag to facilitate purification and functional analysis of proteins of interest. Epitope tags are short peptide sequences that are easily recognized by readily available tag-specific antibodies. Ligation of epitope-tag encoding DNA to cloned DNAs of interest produces epitope tagged fusion proteins that can then be subjected to antibody-dependent experimental procedures. Epitope tagging techniques are widely used in the purification, identification, and functional analysis of proteins. Expression vectors for producing tag fusion proteins in a variety of organisms (including bacteria, yeast, insect, and mammalian cells) are commercially available. Some of the more commonly used fusion tags include: c-myc, FLAG, GFP, GST, HA, His, amd MBP.
