The monoclonal antibody 25H11 recognizes mouse Ephrin B1, a 47kDa membrane protein. Ephrin B1 belongs to a family of ephrins composed of type A (linked to the cell membrane through a glycosylphosphatidyl inositol group) or type B (transmembrane) proteins. The type B ephrins consist of 3 members (B1, B2, and B3) each of which contains a cytoplasmic domain containing tyrosine residues that can be phosphorylated. Ephrin B and ephrin B receptors (Eph B) can interact to potentiate bidirectional downstream signaling between cells expressing either or both the ligand and receptor. Ephrins have been shown to play a role in neural crest cell development through both neurogenesis and neural migration, as well as development of kidney and heart cyto-architecture. Overexpression of type B ephrins in cancer cells is associated with increased vascularity and highly invasive tumors.
