The monoclonal antibody 74.1 recognizes all known forms of the 74kDa intermediate chain subunit of mammalian cytoplasmic dynein. Cytoplasmic dynein is a microtubule-stimulated ATPase responsible for movement of membrane-bound organelles in a directed manner toward the minus end of microtubules, commonly found at the centrosome. Dynein is responsible for the transport of lysosomes, endosomes, phagosomes, peroxisomes, mitochondria, and vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum destined for the Golgi. During mitosis, dynein is responsible for positioning the spindle apparatus as well as being localized to the kinetochores to facilitate chromosome movement.

The 74.1 antibody recognizes human, mouse, rat, bovine, sheep, Xenopus, porcine, and Drosophila dynein intermediate chain.
