Dihydrogen hexahydroxyplatinate(IV) is used as a precursor to produce platinum dioxide (II), a catalyst of hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of carbonyl group or C-Cl linkages in acyl chlorides. It also acts as a precursor to produce other platinum compounds.
