Type X collagen is a non-fibrillar, short-chain, network-forming collagen found in fetal hypertrophic cartilage in the growth zones of long bones, vertebrae, and ribs. It is a short collagen with a triple helical core half the length of the fibril-forming collagen type I, II, and III and a globular domain at the carboxyl end (NC-1 domain) through which the molecules assemble into an hexagonal meshwork. The function of collagen X, a unique homotrimer synthesised by hypertrophic chondrocytes, is not known but its localization and transient expression at sites of calcification suggest that it is likely to be associated with events in the early stages of endochondral bone formation.
